A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
