Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego at the Door.
One snub did the trick. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need the involvement of the talented midfielder, although it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the strategic frameworks and player rankings required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Skill counts but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of the previous squad. He watched the national side secure their spot at the tournament without him. He watched the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel talk about valuing the group’s energy and values. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in top form, scoring crucial goals for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on frightening rivals rather than teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude displays the edge. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to help him and establish a setting where he can use that intensity towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of love and guidance. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to perform well this year but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in the Champions League match versus the German side recently.
The question, though, is how to use the various creators at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager repeating that if it harms the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is also accustomed to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
Tuchel talked about one star making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“This is where eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be observing him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an superior one.
