Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

A Journey Into the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
