The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
