According to a former high-ranking official from the Metropolitan police, law enforcement are now required to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a rise in extremist conjecture on social media platforms.

Recent Incident: Knife Attack on Train in Cambridgeshire

On Sunday morning, British Transport Police announced the arrest of two individuals after a multiple knife attacks aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. One suspect, a 32-year-old black British national, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were initially held. Subsequently, the older suspect was freed with no further action, and authorities stated he had no connection in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

This past summer, new guidelines were rolled out to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the deadly attack of young students in Southport previously.

However, campaigners have raised concerns that this approach could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of suspects and fuel further extremist narratives when information are withheld with the public.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, described the requirement for police to disclose the ethnicity of suspects in incidents involving people of colour as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He voiced sympathy for his former colleagues in the force, noting that they are “in a no-win situation”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, described it “unfortunate” but necessary for police to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, adding that social media are leveraged to advance narratives, making it critical for law enforcement to provide accurate information to address speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had called for a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary pushed for prompt sharing of suspect information, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the public needed to know “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. A profile named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been yelling “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after authorities clarified that the suspects were UK citizens, some figures continued to suggest that information was being concealed. Ben Habib stated it was “hard to believe” that the incident was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to official statements to the opposite.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were created by the UK police leadership body in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

This move came soon after Reform UK accused authorities of concealing the details and migrant background of individuals charged in a different incident in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking a football victory, local authorities revealed that the arrested man was white and British to dispels myths of a extremist-related incident by an individual of Asian origin.

The NPCC stressed that decisions on disclosing these details would remain with individual police forces, taking into account broader moral and legal factors. Confirming a suspect’s immigration status would fall to the Home Office, not police.
