Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
