The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
