Over a fortnight subsequent to the heartbreaking passing of renowned film director Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Reiner, friends and colleagues persist in remembering the pair.
‘Life is Pain Without You’: Cary Elwes Remembers His Director
Writing on Instagram, actor Cary Elwes, who starred in Reiner's beloved 1987 film *The Princess Bride*, stated he only now felt ready to express about his personal sorrow.
"Sufficient time has passed that I can now express my sorrow into words," posted Elwes, noting that his first meeting with Reiner left him smitten. "When we commenced sharing more moments together I realized this was someone I desired in my life."
The actor shared archival material from the production, commenting that he could not remember "a single day without laughter".
"This story is about affection, allegiance and giving. Principles that Rob valued immensely. That is part of the many reasons he was the best person to helm it," Elwes wrote.
He additionally honored Michele Reiner, saying: "Claiming that they were a great team would be an understatement. My heart still pangs every time I think of you." He finished with a line from *The Princess Bride*: "Sure, death cannot stop true love but life is pain without you."
Martin Scorsese Recalls a Colleague and Comrade
In a different piece, legendary director Martin Scorsese also honored Reiner, whom he originally knew in the 1970s.
"From the start, I loved hanging out with Rob. We had a natural affinity for each other. He was uproarious and sometimes acutely humorous, but he was never the kind of guy who would take over the room," Scorsese shared.
Scorsese pointed out Reiner's acting part in his 2013 film *The Wolf of Wall Street*, portraying the father of the protagonist.
"He was skilled at improv with the best. He was a master at comedy, he worked wonderfully with his co-stars, and he understood the human predicament of his character," Scorsese wrote.
Court Proceedings: Autopsy Reports Withheld
Recently, a Los Angeles judge decided to prevent the disclosure of the Reiners' autopsy reports, at the request from the Los Angeles Police Department.
A judicial mandate placed a restriction on the investigation to restrict the public release of "all case details, notes, reports or photos" connected to the active case.
The Medical Examiner's office had already determined their deaths were the result of murder, with a record listing the cause as "injuries from a sharp object".
Aftermath and Reactions
In the wake of the deaths, public personalities offered varying comments.
Former President Donald Trump wrote on the matter, providing provocative statements that were broadly criticized by many commentators.
Podcaster Joe Rogan lent his voice to the those speaking out last week. Talking on his podcast, Rogan characterized the statements as "disappointing" and implied they showed a troubling lack of empathy.
Rogan concluded by remarking that an adviser ought to have intervened when the choice to speak on the death was made.
