Fireworks and a Cheer to Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration of an agreement expected to result in the freeing of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has generated delight and comfort throughout Israel.
An organization that has advocated for the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The agreement—which still must be agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the release of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 captives have been returned—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been retrieved and eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled before the deal being signed.
A crowd began clapping and dancing under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee displaying a placard that read: “We love Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept while observing the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it is such a comfort,” she said. “We must witness them come back home to their loved ones.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the announcement of his impending homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Raise Glasses
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting “To life”, which means “to life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has been joining other hostage families in pushing for a deal which ensures the homecoming of everyone still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We have waited for so long and now it’s here,” he expressed.
He said he felt “shattered” that his cousin would not be among those coming back home but was “radiant with happiness” for the families of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she experienced as if she were in “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to the President and all he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than before,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We will continue struggling... until the end,” she said.
“So many things might occur up to the final instant which is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the work and make sure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was released from captivity through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
