Far-Right Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Next Head of State.
Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Known for his unwavering Catholic views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly centered on promises to address increasing violence and radically restrict migration.
He consistently cited foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His plans envisioned controversial measures such as erecting camps, border walls, security fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Continental Shift
Numerous analysts view Kast's win as aligning with a wider rightward trend in the region, following this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further frame it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Clear Mandate
In spite of his clear popular vote victory, Kast does not have an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative reality could hinder his plans, including a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a measure for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"There are many things about how a Kast presidency will be that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will do them," noted a political science expert.
The professor added, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts associated with the right-wing. However the area with much less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
